Making Art The Old Fashioned Way
Recently I've been craving a more tactile creative practice that digital art creation just doesn't provide. I wanted to work with my hands again, but I didn't want to go back to acrylic painting. To be completely honest with you, I don’t really like painting. I'm an artist who hates painting. I've never liked it, but I've always loved coloring, so naturally soft pastels seemed the perfect medium to explore. It was tough in the beginning y'all!
I restarted this painting 3 times, and here are 5 things I learned in the process:
1. working with pastels requires a great deal of patience and focus.
2. Keep it simple in terms of technique and process (not keeping it simple is why I had to start over 3 times).
3. Wear a mask when using because the dust gets everywhere and I'm sure long-term exposure is horrible for your lungs.
4. Wear gloves they prevent the natural oils in for fingertips from absorbing the pastels which makes blending so much easier!
5. And most importantly, have fun!
I was tapped into the nostalgia of coloring with my big box 64 ct Crayola as a kid, only this felt a bit more fancy and messy all at the same time! So final thoughts on working with pastels: I'm obsessed. 10/10 would recommend!
